Rachel moved from Rhode Island to Florida's Space Coast in 2021. Four years in — she's recording this from her pool deck on a beautiful evening, about to go for a swim. Here's the real, unfiltered update on what moving to Florida was actually like, what surprised her, and whether she'd do it all over again.

Why They Left

The short version: winter depression. Rachel and her husband had just bought an investment property in Rhode Island, which should have been exciting. Instead, she was miserable. "I just can't do this anymore," she told him. The cold, the ice scraping, the shoveling — it had worn her down over 30+ years. Her husband said simply: "Why don't we just move somewhere warm?" She said yes immediately. She didn't think it was actually possible given his job and her newly-built real estate career — but it was.

How They Found the Space Coast

His company had offices across the country. The candidates for warm destinations came down to San Diego (he'd already lived there as a Marine and didn't want to return), Virginia (too cold), and Florida. Florida had openings in Jacksonville, Orlando, and Patrick Space Force Base — the Space Coast. They'd never heard of it. "Cocoa Beach? What's that?" Looking it up, it looked like a small surf town on the ocean — similar in feel to Newport, Rhode Island, which they loved. They were in.

The timeline was remarkably fast. He got an email in May 2021 that the Patrick position was still open. She said to email HR and ask about salary. The range came back higher than what he was making in Rhode Island. He applied that day, had the interview, was offered the job immediately. They were on a plane Friday — two days later. They fell in love on that weekend, put an offer in Sunday, and were moving a month later.

The First Home — and Then the Pool Home

Rachel's first Florida home: $315,000 — about 10 minutes from Cocoa Beach and Cape Canaveral. She bought knowing she'd upgrade eventually. That house is now an investment property (rental). Current home: $450,000, pool home, also within 10 minutes of the beach. "I'm looking at my beautiful pool right now," she says while recording. "I'm probably going to go in after this."

Making Friends From Zero

They didn't know a single person in Florida when they arrived. Rachel's solution: Facebook groups. A women's 20s-30s group. A kayaking group (they got a kayak and made lasting friends through it). Her real estate office. She's still close with people from all three. Her advice: join your HOA Facebook group, show up to events, and don't overthink it. People in Florida — especially the Space Coast — are genuinely welcoming. The "don't come here, go home" voices online don't represent the actual community.

The Real Estate Restart

Starting a real estate career from scratch in a new state while interest rates spiked was genuinely hard. The first year was a grind. By the end of year one, she had momentum. Now she helps 40+ families per year move to the Space Coast. The YouTube channel — which she started to help people in her position — became the engine for that business.

What She Loves 4 Years In

  • No state income tax — significant for both income and retirement planning
  • Cheaper everything — cocktails, restaurants, water, electricity, gas. She went back to Rhode Island and paid $220 for four lobster rolls. A cocktail in RI: $15. In Florida: $5.
  • Flat roads, wide streets — coming from hilly Connecticut and pothole-riddled Rhode Island, this is genuinely life-improving
  • The cruise port — 10-15 minutes away, no flying required. Weekend cruises, 4-day cruises, 2-week European itineraries. "Vacation starts when you get in the Uber."
  • Rocket launches — genuinely cool for years 1-2, now just part of the lifestyle. SpaceX goes up nearly every week.
  • Atlantic coast breeze — significantly more comfortable than the Gulf Coast in summer
  • Community events — Mardi Gras, 4th of July, Christmas golf cart parades, boat parades, neighborhood gatherings
  • 250 sunny days per year — "You can't shovel sunshine"

The Honest Challenges

  • Hurricane anxiety — especially years 1-2. Long-timers say don't worry. Rachel still watches every storm closely. Impact windows helped enormously. Her philosophy: get flood insurance, follow Mike's Weather Page, know your evacuation plan.
  • Bugs — no-see-ums (the hardest), roaches (pest control solves this), mosquitoes, snakes (mostly non-poisonous near water). Avon Skin So Soft is the no-see-um hack.
  • Drivers — nobody uses blinkers. I-95 can be fast and chaotic. She stays on US-1 as much as possible and avoids the left lane on the highway.
  • Summer heat — 87-90°+ by evening in summer. Pool and breeze make it manageable. She loves it compared to Northeast winters.

Would She Do It Again?

"Absolutely. In a heartbeat. I would have done it sooner." She'd pick the same area, the same lifestyle, the same choice — over and over again. Four years in, the friends are real, the career is built, the community is home. The move that felt risky turned out to be one of the best decisions of her life.
