Then, somewhere around the second or third call, the real question comes out: what is the healthcare situation like? It matters for everyone, and it matters even more if you are moving here for retirement or managing an ongoing condition.

The honest answer is that Brevard County healthcare is in the middle of the biggest building boom it has ever seen. Two major systems are investing well over a billion dollars combined in new hospitals, expansions, and emergency rooms across the county. Here is the current map, what changed recently, and what it means for where you buy.

Which hospital system is the largest in Brevard County?

Health First is the locally governed, not-for-profit system that operates four hospitals on the Space Coast. It has served Brevard County for about 30 years and runs the region's highest-level emergency care.

Hospital

Location

Notes

Holmes Regional Medical Center

Melbourne

The county's largest hospital and Brevard's only Level II Trauma Center

Viera Hospital

Viera

Serves central Brevard, with expansion plans for more beds and operating rooms

Palm Bay Hospital

Palm Bay

A $230 million expansion tower is planned to increase capacity

Cape Canaveral Hospital

Cocoa Beach

Being replaced by a new $410 million hospital on Merritt Island, expected to open in early 2027

Health First has publicly committed to roughly $800 million in Brevard County investments, including the new Cape Canaveral Hospital on Merritt Island and a freestanding emergency room in Rockledge that is expected to open around the end of 2026. You can read more on the system's own update page at hf.org.

What about North Brevard and Titusville?

North Brevard is anchored by Parrish Medical Center in Titusville, a 208-bed public, not-for-profit hospital founded in 1958. Parrish is the region's only independent public community hospital and the first U.S. member of Cleveland Clinic Connected, which gives its medical staff access to Cleveland Clinic resources and expertise. If you are looking at homes in Titusville, Mims, or Port St. John, this is your closest full-service hospital.

What happened to Rockledge Hospital?

This is the change most people ask about. Orlando Health purchased the former Steward Health Care hospitals in Rockledge, Melbourne, and Sebastian in late 2024. After inspections found the Rockledge facility in poor condition, Rockledge Hospital closed in April 2025.

Orlando Health continues to operate Orlando Health Melbourne Hospital, a 119-bed acute care facility on North Wickham Road, and has announced plans to invest more than $750 million in Brevard County, including a new hospital and three freestanding emergency departments in the north, central, and south parts of the county. Between the two systems, central Brevard is expected to gain back emergency capacity over the next few years rather than lose it.

Where do veterans get care on the Space Coast?

Brevard County has a large veteran community, and the Viera VA Clinic at 2900 Veterans Way provides primary care, urgent care, and a long list of specialty services including mental health, orthopedics, optometry, and audiology. For many military retirees settling near Patrick Space Force Base or in the Viera area, having a full VA outpatient clinic minutes away is a genuine factor in choosing central Brevard.

What does this mean for choosing where to live?

A few practical takeaways for Space Coast buyers:

Central Brevard (Viera, Rockledge, Suntree): You are close to Viera Hospital, the Viera VA Clinic, and the medical office corridor that has grown up around them. The new Rockledge freestanding ER will shorten emergency response gaps left by the hospital closure.

South Brevard (Melbourne, Palm Bay, West Melbourne): Holmes Regional gives you the county's only trauma center, and Palm Bay Hospital is set to grow substantially.

Beachside (Cocoa Beach, Cape Canaveral, Merritt Island): The new Cape Canaveral Hospital on Merritt Island will replace the aging Cocoa Beach facility with a modern campus that is easier to reach from both the island and the beach communities.

North Brevard (Titusville, Mims): Parrish Medical Center covers the north end, within sight of Kennedy Space Center.

Is there a trauma center on the Space Coast?

Yes. Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne is Brevard County's only state-accredited Level II Trauma Center, with 24/7 trauma coverage and air ambulance transport.

Is a new hospital being built on Merritt Island?

Yes. Health First is building a $410 million replacement for Cape Canaveral Hospital on Merritt Island, with construction expected to wrap up around the end of 2026 and doors opening in early 2027.

Did Brevard County lose hospital capacity when Rockledge closed?

In the short term, central Brevard lost an emergency room. Both major systems responded with expansion plans: Health First is opening a freestanding ER in Rockledge, and Orlando Health has announced a new hospital plus three freestanding emergency departments for Brevard County.

If healthcare access is a deciding factor in your Space Coast move, I am happy to talk through how specific neighborhoods line up with the hospitals and clinics that matter to you.
