Where should I live if I work at L3Harris, Northrop Grumman or Embraer in Melbourne?

Melbourne, West Melbourne, Palm Bay, Suntree, Viera and the beachside towns from Indialantic to Satellite Beach are the practical set. The corridor runs along Ellis Road and NASA Boulevard next to Melbourne Orlando International Airport, and Ellis Road is under construction into 2027.

This is the half of Brevard's aerospace economy that nobody writes relocation content about. It is also the bigger employer cluster by headcount.

Who Is Actually Here

L3Harris is headquartered in Melbourne with more than 7,000 Brevard County jobs, plus a separate Palm Bay campus where a $100 million, 94,000 square foot satellite integration and test facility opened in August 2025.

Northrop Grumman runs 17 buildings on a 109-acre campus next to the airport with about 5,000 employees, roughly two million square feet after opening a 300,000 square foot engineering facility in August 2026 with capacity for more than 1,200 engineers. Embraer builds Phenom and Praetor business jets there. Leonardo DRS is in Melbourne, and Argotec opened its first US satellite production facility here in April 2026.

Brevard County's own road documents put roughly 20,000 aerospace employees commuting into this corridor.

The Ellis Road Problem

Ellis Road is the spine, running east to west between I-95 and Wickham Road. It is currently two lanes and is being widened to four with a median, sidewalks and bike lanes across 1.7 miles, a $62 million project. Clearing ran through 2025, utility relocation took about nine months, and main construction began in spring 2026.

If you are commuting into this cluster, you will be driving through an active construction corridor into at least 2027. Factor it into the test drive and do not judge the route by how it looks today.

Town by Town

Melbourne and West Melbourne

Closest in, widest range of price points, and real inventory under $300,000. Melbourne carries a city millage of 7.3089 on the 2025 roll, which is the cost of being inside the city. Melbourne against Viera covers that tradeoff properly.

Suntree and Viera

North on I-95 or Wickham Road. Both are unincorporated, so no city millage, which is the single most misunderstood fact in this market since both use a Melbourne mailing address. Viera against Suntree is the comparison to read.

Palm Bay

South, via I-95 or Palm Bay Road, and the most affordable of the practical set. Also directly relevant if your job is at the L3Harris Palm Bay campus rather than the Melbourne headquarters.

The Beachside Towns

Indialantic, Satellite Beach, Indian Harbour Beach and Melbourne Beach all reach the corridor via the Melbourne or Eau Gallie causeways. You pay more per square foot and you add a bridge, and you get to live at the ocean. This comparison sorts out the two most similar options.

What Not to Do

Do not look at Titusville. It is a genuinely long daily interstate commute from there to Melbourne, and the north county and south county aerospace markets are not comfortably commutable to each other. If you are still deciding, start with the overview of both markets.

On Pay and Budget

The Economic Development Commission notes the region has more engineers per 1,000 workers than any Florida metro and more than double the national patent rate, but that high-tech wages here run roughly 20 percent below the national average. If you are coming from a coastal tech market, budget from your actual offer. The carrying costs are worth reading first.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is Viera from the Melbourne aerospace corridor?

It is a straightforward run south on I-95 or Wickham Road and one of the more common commutes in the county. Drive it at your actual start time before you commit, since Ellis Road construction runs into 2027.

Is Palm Bay a good option for L3Harris?

Yes, particularly if your role sits at the Palm Bay campus rather than the Melbourne headquarters. Palm Bay is also the most affordable of the practical towns for this corridor.

Can I live at the beach and work in the Melbourne corridor?

Yes. Indialantic, Satellite Beach, Indian Harbour Beach and Melbourne Beach all connect via the Melbourne or Eau Gallie causeways. You are adding a bridge and paying more per square foot.
