Is there a Costco, Trader Joe's or Whole Foods on Florida's Space Coast?

Yes, all three. Costco is on the Pineda Causeway in Melbourne, Trader Joe's is at The Avenue Viera, and Whole Foods is on Viera Boulevard in Rockledge. All three sit within a few miles of each other.

This is the question I get more than almost any other from buyers relocating to Brevard County, and most of the relocation content online still answers it wrong. Older guides tell people the nearest Costco is in Orlando and the nearest Trader Joe's is an hour away. That has not been true for years.

If you are moving to the Space Coast from a metro area, the honest summary is this: Brevard County has every major chain you are used to, and they are clustered tightly in one corridor. Here is where everything actually is.

The big three, and where they sit

Look at those three addresses and you will spot the Space Coast quirk that confuses every relocation buyer: one says Melbourne, one says Melbourne, one says Rockledge, and locally all three are considered Viera.

Why do Viera and Suntree addresses say Melbourne or Rockledge?

Because Viera and Suntree are unincorporated communities in Brevard County. They are not incorporated cities, so they do not have their own municipal mailing addresses. Homes and businesses there carry a Melbourne, Rockledge or Cocoa mailing address depending on the postal route.

This trips people up constantly when they are searching online for Space Coast homes or trying to figure out how far something is. A Trader Joe's showing a Melbourne address may be twelve minutes from a Suntree house and thirty from downtown Melbourne. When you are evaluating Brevard County neighborhoods, use the map, not the mailing address.

Where are the warehouse clubs on the Space Coast?

Brevard County is unusually well served here. Beyond Costco on the Pineda Causeway, there are two BJ's Wholesale Clubs and a Sam's Club:

  • BJ's Wholesale Club Melbourne, 1155 Palm Bay Road NE, Melbourne, with gas and tire center
  • BJ's Wholesale Club Merritt Island, 415 East Merritt Avenue, Merritt Island, with gas and tire center
  • Sam's Club, 4255 W. New Haven Avenue, Melbourne

Three warehouse clubs with fuel across one county is a real quality-of-life factor, especially for buyers coming from places where the nearest club was a 40-minute drive. If you land in Merritt Island, the BJ's on Merritt Avenue is close enough to be a weekly stop.

Publix, and how the Space Coast really shops

Publix is the everyday default across Brevard County, and there are more than a dozen stores spread through the market area. A few worth knowing by name:

  • Suntree Square, 7777 N. Wickham Road, Melbourne
  • Addison Center at Viera, 7655 Stadium Parkway
  • Rockledge Crossing, 3820 Murrell Road, Rockledge
  • Merritt Island, 1850 N. Courtenay Parkway
  • Atlantic Plaza, 1024 Highway A1A, Satellite Beach
  • Banana River Square, 2067 N. Atlantic Avenue, Cocoa Beach
  • Publix at Indialantic, 700 N. Miramar Avenue

The pattern that matters for buyers: every beachside town in Brevard County has its own Publix. Satellite Beach, Indialantic and Cocoa Beach residents do not have to cross a causeway for groceries. That is not true of every barrier island in Florida.

For specialty and natural grocery beyond Whole Foods, The Fresh Market is at 6385 N. Wickham Road in the Suntree area, open 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. Sprouts Farmers Market has a store at 4460 Hollywood Boulevard in West Melbourne open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., plus a second location on N. Wickham Road. Where do Space Coast residents shop for everything else?

The Avenue Viera at 2261 Town Center Avenue is the outdoor lifestyle center that anchors the county's retail. Its current tenant directory includes Trader Joe's, Nordstrom Rack, Kohl's, Belk, AMC Theatres, Sephora, lululemon, World Market, Old Navy, Books-A-Million and Sur La Table. If you are used to an open-air shopping district, this is the closest analog in Brevard County.

Melbourne Square is the enclosed mall on the mainland, anchored by Macy's, with a food court and posted mall-walking hours Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday noon to 6 p.m. Merritt Square Mall at 777 E. Merritt Island Causeway serves the island with 40-plus stores and restaurants.

Target has a large Viera store at 8455 N. Wickham Road with a CVS pharmacy, Starbucks and full grocery, plus a Merritt Island location on Crockett Boulevard. Walmart Supercenters are spread across Melbourne and Merritt Island.

For local produce, the Downtown Melbourne Farmers Market runs at Riverview Park, 2400 Riverview Drive, every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. October through May, then on the first and third Saturdays June through September.
