One of our favorite things about living on Florida's Space Coast is that there is always something happening, especially in May when the weather is dialed in and the snowbird crowd has thinned out. Whether you are a relocation buyer in town for a discovery weekend, a new resident still learning the area, or a Brevard County local looking for plans, here is the local insider's guide to what is actually worth doing this weekend on the Space Coast.

If You Want a Beach Day

Cocoa Beach Pier and the Surf Lineup

The classic. Cocoa Beach Pier is open every day with restaurants, live music, and surfboard rentals if you have never tried the small Atlantic waves we get here. The lifeguard stands are fully staffed by mid-May, the water is in the mid-70s, and the parking lots open early. Get there before 10 a.m. for a spot, or take the trolley from one of the side-street lots. Live music at the pier usually starts in the afternoon and runs into the evening.

Lori Wilson Park in Cocoa Beach

Locals know Lori Wilson is the better beach option for families. Free parking, real bathrooms, a boardwalk through a maritime hammock, and the shaded picnic pavilions make it a full-day beach without the pier crowds. Mid-May is also turtle nesting season, so keep an eye out for the marked nests in the dunes.

Paradise Beach Park in Melbourne

If you are over in Melbourne or Indialantic, Paradise Beach Park is the move. Easy parking, a playground for the kids, and a much calmer pace than Cocoa Beach. The surf here is usually gentler too, which makes it a favorite for families with younger children.

If You Want to See a Rocket Launch

Welcome to the Space Coast. Launches in the second half of May 2026 are looking busy, with SpaceX Falcon 9 missions out of Cape Canaveral Space Force Station and Kennedy Space Center on the schedule almost every weekend this month. Check the official launch schedule at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex website or the Space Coast Office of Tourism before you head out, since launch times shift constantly.

Best free viewing spots: Jetty Park in Cape Canaveral, Space View Park in Titusville, the Cocoa Beach Pier, and Playalinda Beach inside Canaveral National Seashore. For a unique angle, head up to Parrish Park in Titusville for a clear view across the Indian River straight at the launch pads.

If You Want Live Music and Food

Friday Fest in Downtown Cocoa Village

Held the first Friday of the month from October through May, Friday Fest brings live bands, food trucks, beer gardens, and walkable shopping along the brick streets of historic Cocoa Village. May is the last one of the season, so it tends to draw a great crowd. Even off Friday Fest weekends, Cocoa Village has weekend live music at places like Murdock's Bistro, Ryan's Pizza, and The Tiny Turtle Distillery.

Downtown Melbourne and the EGAD District

Downtown Melbourne hosts live music almost every Friday and Saturday night up and down New Haven Avenue, and the Eau Gallie Arts District (EGAD) just north of downtown has gallery walks, brewery patios, and weekend dinner spots like Squid Lips Overwater Grill that you can take a boat right up to. Foo Bar and Mainstreet Pub are reliably great for live local bands on weekends.

If You Want Outdoor Adventure

Brevard Zoo in Melbourne

One of the most underrated zoos in Florida and easily one of the best things to do with kids on the Space Coast. The kayak tour through the African Savannah lets you paddle right past the giraffes and rhinos. Mid-May is a sweet spot for the zoo, before summer humidity hits but after spring break crowds clear.

Manatee Sanctuary Park in Cape Canaveral

Free, gorgeous, and one of the most reliable spots on the Space Coast to actually see manatees in May. Walking paths, picnic pavilions, and a long boardwalk on the Banana River. Bring binoculars.

Enchanted Forest Sanctuary in Titusville

If you want to escape the heat under a real Florida oak hammock, this 470-acre sanctuary has shaded trails, boardwalks, and a free nature center. It is one of the quieter spots in Brevard County and a favorite of locals who do not want a beach day.

If You Want a Saturday Morning Vibe

Brevard County Farmers Markets

The Saturday morning farmers market circuit on the Space Coast is excellent. The big ones for mid-May 2026 are the Wickham Park Farmers Market in Melbourne on Saturday mornings, the Eau Gallie Arts District Farmers Market in Melbourne on Saturday mornings, and the Cocoa Village Farmers Market in downtown Cocoa Village on Saturday mornings. Local seafood, citrus, produce, and small-batch hot sauces are the move.

If You Want a Quiet Sunday

Take a sunrise drive out to Playalinda Beach inside Canaveral National Seashore. Pack coffee. Sit on the dunes. Watch the rockets and the dolphins. This is the version of the Space Coast that does not show up on Instagram, and it is the one that makes people fall in love with this place.

A Few Notes for Visitors and New Residents

Mid-May on the Space Coast is one of the best stretches of the year. Daytime highs are usually in the low to mid 80s, water temps are climbing into the upper 70s, and afternoon thunderstorms are rare compared to summer. Plan most outdoor activities before 1 p.m. or after 5 p.m. for the most comfortable temps. And if you are visiting to explore relocation, plan to drive through Viera, Melbourne, Rockledge, Cocoa Beach, and Satellite Beach at different times of day. Each town has a totally different feel on a Saturday morning than it does on a Tuesday at 5 p.m.
