Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge

Just east of Mims, the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge covers over 140,000 acres of diverse habitats, including saltwater estuaries, freshwater marshes, coastal dunes, and hardwood hammocks. The refuge is home to more than 1,500 species of plants and animals, including endangered species like the Florida scrub jay, Atlantic loggerhead sea turtle, and West Indian manatee.

For residents of Mims and northern Brevard, the refuge is essentially a massive backyard for outdoor recreation. Birdwatching is world-class here, with over 330 bird species documented. The Black Point Wildlife Drive is a popular seven-mile loop that offers opportunities to see herons, egrets, roseate spoonbills, and bald eagles without leaving your car. Hiking trails, fishing spots, and photography opportunities are scattered throughout the refuge.

Canaveral National Seashore

The Canaveral National Seashore protects 24 miles of pristine, undeveloped Atlantic coastline, making it one of the longest stretches of undeveloped beach on Florida's east coast. The seashore is accessible from the northern entrance near New Smyrna Beach or the southern entrance near Kennedy Space Center.

For Mims residents, Playalinda Beach on the southern end of the seashore is the closest access point. This beach is uncrowded, unspoiled, and offers a beach experience that feels worlds away from the developed beach towns farther south. Swimming, surfing, fishing, and simply enjoying miles of empty sand are all part of the appeal.

Indian River Lagoon

The Indian River Lagoon runs along the eastern edge of the greater Mims area, and it is one of the most biodiverse estuaries in North America. The lagoon supports over 4,300 species of plants and animals, and the fishing is exceptional. Redfish, trout, snook, flounder, and tarpon are all targeted by anglers in these waters.

Kayaking and paddleboarding on the lagoon offer a peaceful way to explore the waterways, spot dolphins and manatees, and enjoy the natural scenery. Several launch points in the Titusville and Mims area provide easy access, and the less-developed northern sections of the lagoon tend to be quieter and less trafficked than areas farther south.

St. Johns River and Freshwater Recreation

To the west of Mims, the St. Johns River and its associated marshes and floodplains provide additional outdoor recreation opportunities. The St. Johns is Florida's longest river and a popular destination for freshwater fishing, with bass, crappie, and catfish among the common catches. Airboat tours, river cruises, and canoeing are also available in the area.

The combination of the Indian River to the east and the St. Johns system to the west gives Mims-area residents dual access to both saltwater and freshwater recreation, which is a rare combination in Florida.

Rocket Launches from a Natural Setting

One of the unique perks of living near Mims is watching rocket launches from Kennedy Space Center in a setting surrounded by natural beauty rather than commercial development. SpaceX, NASA, and other launch providers send rockets up regularly, and the northern Brevard vantage points along the Indian River and the refuge offer some of the best unobstructed views. Watching a rocket arc into the sky while standing in a nature preserve is an experience that captures the essence of the Space Coast.
