The barrier island towns, Cape Canaveral, Cocoa Beach, Satellite Beach, Indian Harbour Beach, Indialantic, and Melbourne Beach, are all reached by a handful of causeways, and which causeway you live near shapes your commute, your grocery runs, and your hurricane evacuation route.

When I show relocation buyers around the Space Coast, I always drive the causeways with them, because a house that looks perfectly located on a map can be twenty minutes from the bridge you would actually use every day. The northern crossings: Titusville and the SR 528 corridor

In Titusville, the high-rise Max Brewer Bridge carries SR 406 east from downtown across the water toward the north end of Merritt Island, the wildlife refuge, and the beaches of the national seashore. South of there, SR 528 (the Beachline) is the workhorse of north-central Brevard County. It crosses the Bennett Causeway to Merritt Island and continues to Port Canaveral and Cape Canaveral, and it is also the direct route west to Orlando and the airport. If cruise terminals, port jobs, or frequent Orlando trips are part of your life, living near the 528 corridor saves real time.

The central crossings: SR 520 and the Pineda

SR 520 crosses from Cocoa through the heart of Merritt Island and continues over the Banana River into Cocoa Beach. It is the classic route to the beach for central Brevard and the corridor most Merritt Island shopping sits on.

The Pineda Causeway (SR 404) is the one out-of-town buyers most often overlook. It runs from an interchange at I-95 past US 1 near Palm Shores, crosses the south tip of Merritt Island, and lands at SR A1A beside Patrick Space Force Base, just north of Satellite Beach. It opened in the early 1970s as a toll road, the tolls came off in 1990, and a 2011 extension tied it directly into I-95, making it a designated hurricane evacuation route. For anyone working at Patrick or living in Suntree or Viera with beach habits, the Pineda is the crossing that makes the map work.

The southern crossings: Eau Gallie and Melbourne

The Eau Gallie Causeway (SR 518) links Melbourne's Eau Gallie arts district to Indian Harbour Beach. The Melbourne Causeway carries US 192 from downtown Melbourne across to Indialantic, where the road ends at A1A two blocks from the ocean. South of Indialantic there are no more crossings: Melbourne Beach and the south beaches all funnel through these two bridges, which is part of why the far south beaches feel quieter and trade convenience for space.

• Match the causeway to your commute. Beachside to Kennedy Space Center favors the north crossings. Beachside to L3Harris or downtown Melbourne favors the Eau Gallie or Melbourne causeways.
• Count the bridges, not the miles. A Satellite Beach home near the Pineda can reach I-95 faster than a mainland home stuck in surface traffic.
• Think about storm season. Barrier island residents evacuate across these same causeways, and routes like the Pineda extension exist partly for that purpose. It is a normal part of coastal Brevard County life, and worth understanding before you choose beachside.

How many bridges connect the mainland to the Space Coast beaches?
