Can you choose your own real estate agent if your relocation package comes with an assigned one?

Yes. If you accepted a position at Blue Origin, SpaceX, Boeing, Lockheed Martin, or another aerospace employer on the Space Coast, your relocation package almost always lets you keep the agent you want, as long as that agent agrees to the relocation management company's referral terms.

You took the offer. The package is real. There is a relocation coordinator on the phone walking you through home sale assistance, temporary housing, and moving services, and somewhere in that call comes a sentence that sounds something like, "We will connect you with your real estate agent." A few days later you have an inbox introduction from someone you have never met, in a market you have never lived in, and you are told this is the agent you will be working with.

Most aerospace hires assume that is the end of the conversation. It is not.

Here is what almost no one explains during onboarding: the relocation company does not get to pick your agent. You do. The only thing that has to happen is your agent of choice has to agree to the relocation management company's referral terms. Once those terms are signed, the relocation services run exactly the same way they would have if you had used the agent you were assigned.

I work with Blue Origin, SpaceX, Boeing, Lockheed Martin, L3Harris, and Northrop Grumman families every year, and I am writing this so the next person on the phone with their relocation coordinator has the full picture before saying yes to an agent they were never given a real choice about.

How Aerospace Relocation Packages Actually Work on the Space Coast

When a major aerospace or defense employer moves you to Brevard County, Florida, they typically do not handle the move themselves. They contract a Relocation Management Company (RMC) to coordinate the entire process.

The big names you will see in aerospace and defense relocations include Cartus, SIRVA, BGRS, Graebel, Aires, NEI Global, and industry market data sources Workforce Mobility. Different employers use different RMCs. Some employers use more than one depending on the level of the position. The industry trade group, Worldwide ERC, sets many of the standards these companies follow.

The RMC has a network of agents in every market, and that is where the assigned agent comes from. The agent in your inbox was not chosen for you because they are the best fit for your move. They were chosen because they are already enrolled in that RMC's network in Florida.

That distinction matters when you are buying a home in a market like the Space Coast, where the difference between an agent who actually works Merritt Island, Viera, Suntree, Rockledge, Cocoa Beach, Satellite Beach, Cape Canaveral, and Indialantic every week, and an agent who covers half the state, can show up in your closing price, your inspection negotiations, and the home you live in for the next ten years.

The Myth: "I Have to Use the Agent the Relocation Company Sends Me"

This is the single biggest misconception aerospace hires have when they land on the Space Coast.

You were not told you have to use that agent. You were told a name. There is a difference.

Buried in nearly every relocation policy is language that allows for what the industry calls an "agent of choice" referral, sometimes labeled "client referral" or "self-referred agent." It means you, the employee, can name the agent you want to work with, and the RMC will route the referral to that person instead.

The reason it gets framed like a directive is because it is the path of least resistance for the relocation coordinator. They click a button, an in-network agent in Brevard County gets pinged, and the coordinator moves on to the next file. If you ask for someone specific, they have to send paperwork to that agent and wait for it to come back signed. It is more work for them. It is the same work for you either way.

What Your Agent Has to Agree To

This is the part that almost never gets explained to the buyer.

For your agent to be approved by your relocation management company, they have to agree to the RMC's referral terms. The standard terms across the industry typically include the following:

  • A signed referral agreement between the agent's brokerage and the RMC
  • Specific reporting requirements, including a Broker's Market Analysis (BMA) on any home sale, weekly status updates, and standardized communication formats
  • Compliance with the RMC's timeline expectations and process steps
  • Minimum production, certification, and experience standards (most major RMCs want full-time agents with multi-year track records)

That is the list. There is no secret hurdle. There is no quiet rule that disqualifies outside agents. If your agent is willing to accept those terms, the RMC will work with them.

None of this comes out of your pocket. It does not change the terms of your relocation package. It does not reduce any benefit you were promised in your offer letter.

Why This Matters for Aerospace Buyers Moving to Brevard County

You are not buying a generic home in a generic market. You are buying on the Space Coast, which is one of the fastest-growing aerospace corridors in the country, according to the EDC of Florida's Space Coast. The market has its own dynamics that a non-local agent will not catch.

A few examples of what local knowledge actually changes:

  • Commute logic. Where you live in Brevard County determines whether your commute to the Cape, Exploration Park, or the Melbourne side of the county is twenty minutes or fifty. An agent who does not work this market every week cannot tell you the difference between a home off Courtenay Parkway and a home off Wickham Road at 6:30 a.m.
  • Flood zones, wind zones, and insurance. Properties two streets apart can have very different insurance costs in coastal Brevard. This is one of the most expensive surprises a relocation buyer can run into after closing.
  • HOA, community assessments, and 55+ community rules. Viera in particular has a layered structure of associations and assessments. Cape Canaveral, Cocoa Beach, and the barrier island have specific short-term rental rules that matter if you ever plan to rent the home out.
  • Aerospace-specific timing. Workers heading to Blue Origin, SpaceX, Boeing, Lockheed Martin, L3Harris, and Northrop Grumman often have program-driven start dates. A local agent who has run this play dozens of times can sequence temporary housing, home search trips, and offer timing around your report date instead of fighting against it.

A referred agent who covers half of Florida will not give you any of that. A Space Coast specialist who lives here, works here, and has closed multiple aerospace relocations will.

Working With Us On a Relocation Package

My partner Nichole and I run one of the top relocation teams on the Space Coast. We are based in Merritt Island and cover Melbourne, Viera, Suntree, Rockledge, Cocoa Beach, Satellite Beach, Indialantic, Cape Canaveral, Titusville, and Palm Bay. Five star reviews are the standard, not the exception, and the majority of our business comes from referrals: aerospace families telling the next hire on their team to call us before they sign anything.

When the relocation paperwork comes our way, we sign it, we hit the reporting timelines, and we run the process from start to finish without skipping a step. The relocation company gets exactly what it needs. You get a Space Coast specialist who lives in this market, knows the commute math to the Cape and to Exploration Park, and has helped aerospace families pick the right neighborhood, the right insurance setup, and the right closing date for the program they are reporting to.

Choosing us is not a workaround. It is what the policy already allows. And once you compare a true local specialist to a name pulled from a referral pool, the choice gets easier on its own.

How to Switch to Your Own Agent (Step by Step)

  1. Call or email your relocation coordinator. Tell them you have an agent of choice you want to work with. The exact phrase to use is, "I would like to designate my own real estate agent. Please initiate an agent-of-choice referral."
  2. Give them my name, brokerage, and contact information. Rachel Langley, Blue Marlin Real Estate, 321-375-1211, rachel@livingspacecoast.com.
  3. Your coordinator will send the referral paperwork to me. I sign and return it the same day.
  4. Once the agreement is back, the relocation services kick in exactly the same way as if you had used their assigned agent.

That is the whole process. It usually takes 24 to 72 hours, and it does not delay your move.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will choosing my own agent reduce my relocation benefits?

No. Your relocation benefits are tied to your employer and the RMC, not to which specific agent you use. Home sale assistance, temporary housing, household goods, and any direct reimbursements stay in place when you select your own agent, as long as your agent is willing to sign the RMC's referral agreement.

Does it cost me anything to bring in my own agent?

No. Your closing costs, your home price, and your relocation budget are not affected by whether you used an assigned agent or your own agent. The relocation company's terms are settled between the brokerages on the back end.

What if I have already been introduced to a relocation agent?

You can still switch. Until you have signed a buyer representation agreement with the assigned agent, you are not committed to that representation. Call your relocation coordinator and request an agent-of-choice referral to the agent you actually want.

How early should I lock in my agent before I move?

As early as possible. The most expensive part of an aerospace relocation is buying the wrong home in the wrong part of Brevard County. Picking your agent before your house-hunting trip means you walk into that trip with a curated list, a commute analysis, and an insurance reality check already in hand.

Ready to Make the Move?

If you are headed to the Space Coast for Blue Origin, SpaceX, Boeing, Lockheed Martin, L3Harris, Northrop Grumman, or another aerospace or defense employer, you do not have to take the agent you were handed. You can choose someone who lives in this market, works it every week, and has run this exact playbook for hires before you.
